Author Bio

Rathus, Spencer A. : Saint John's University

Spencer Rathus earned his Ph.D. in psychology in 1972 and then entered clinical practice and teaching. Because he was interested in writing, he co-authored a Doubleday nonfiction book in 1977--BT: Behavior Therapy Strategy for Solving Problems in Living. Rathus went on to publish more than twenty research articles in journals such as Behavior Therapy, Journal of Clinical Psychology, Behavior Research and Therapy, Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry, Adolescence, and Criminology. His research interests lie in the areas of psychological disorders, methods of therapy, human growth and development, and psychological assessment. Foremost among his research publications was that of the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (Rathus, S.A. [1973]. A 30-item schedule for assessing assertive behavior. Behavior Therapy, 4, 398-406). The 'RAS' remains widely used in research and clinical practice and has been referenced so often that it has achieved the status of a 'citation classic' (Rathus, S.A. [1987]. Citation classic: A 30-item schedule for assessing assertive behavior. In N. J. Smelser (Ed.), Contemporary Classics in the Social and Behavioral Sciences. Philadelphia: Institute for Scientific Information Press). Since 1980, with the publication of the first edition of Adjustment and Growth: The Challenges of Life, Rathus has poured his energies into his textbooks, while teaching at Northeastern University, New Mexico State University, St. John's University, and currently at Montclair State University. His introductory psychology textbook, Psychology in the New Millennium, is in its 7th edition. Rathus lives in Short Hills, New Jersey, with his wife and three of his daughters, the youngest of whom is in second grade. His oldest daughter has become a psychologist and teaches at C. W. Post College of Long Island University.
