Summary

Many HMOs are including alternative therapies in their benefits, and reports of herbal and other remedies are constantly in the news -- people need an objective source of information and sound advice on alternative medicine. Dr. Barrie Cassileth shows the reader how to evaluate over fifty therapies, from Ayurveda to homeopathy to acupuncture. She discusses the origins of each therapy, the reasons practitioners say it works, the scientific evidence, and the places to go for treatment. Dr. Cassileth includes methods that might have no scientific basis but seem to work, and she forthrightly warns against those that may be dangerous. Arranged alphabetically with illustrations throughout, The Alternative Medicine Handbook is the ideal guide to safe alternative therapies.
