Summary

Every day, we face the need to make new decisions and address new issues. Regardless of our age, our experience, or the context of the situation, life demands that we make choices and fix problems. The ability to successfully make decisions, solve problems, and understand and resolve other issues as they arise is fundamental to our success in school, in the workplace, and in our communities. Yet few of us were ever taught to do this effectively. The Tregoe Education Forum has identified four types of challenging situations, each of which has unique requirements and calls for a different, rational-thinking approach - decision analysis, potential problem analysis, problem analysis, and situation appraisal. Analytic Processes for School Leaders: An ASCD Action Tool helps educators explore these situations. The Analytic Process for School Leaders Handbook describes the four situations and outlines, step by step, rational processes for addressing each one. The text provides exercises for applying these four processes to situations in elementary school, middle school, and high school, as well as to typical administrative decisions. This ASCD Action Tool also contains the Scenarios videotape, which illustrates key elements of the processes in a variety of classroom settings and administrative situations. Finally, the Analytic Processes for School Leaders book by Cynthia Richetti and Benjamin Tregoe is available separately and lays the groundwork in research and practice for the four processes. The processes described in Analytic Processes for School Leaders: An ASCD Action Tool help educators achieve results in various classroom and administrative situations. They can apply to most any content area or administrative scenario and can incorporate all of the described components or just a few key steps.
