Not illustrated. 1892 Excerpt: ...the figure of a knight kneeling before a low desk, clad in the costume of, apparently, the latter part of the sixteenth or the earlier part of the seventeenth century, wearing a cuirass, his helmet, with vizor open, placed on the ground in front of him. The whole thing, we found, was made o ...show moref plaster, and is gradually crumbling away. With a view to its preservation, the monument has been literally plastered over with lime-wash, so that the detail of the ornament, which, from the faint indications now visible, must have been fairly good, have, in a great measure, disappeared. We could get no information from either the present incumbent, or from those who bad lived here in the past, about its history, so we came to the conclusion that it must have been erected to the memory ot Sir John Bodvel, a celebrated Anglesey Royalist, who lived at Parciau, in the adjoining parish. The east window, though small, is a good example of the third period of the Pointed style, and contains in its upper traceries some choice bits of old glass, which, we were informed, would be well taken care of. In this remote little Anglesey churchyard are buried the unclaimed bodies of those who lost their lives in that terrible catastrophe, the wreck of the Royal Charter; and one of the chief objects of this restoration is to extend the nave outwards, in order to include the spot where the bodies have been buried, thus making the nave of this little country church a sort of memorial chapel; and those interested in the matter intend also to erect within the building the obelisk now standing outside over the grave, which will be a most unsightly object in a church of this size, so it is to be hoped that this intention maj be abandoned. D. Griffith Davies, Local Secretary for Carnarvonshire. ... ...show less
