Bakerman's Abcs Of Interpretive Laboratory Data - 3rd edition

This book was started because there was a need for a clear, concise, pocket-sizes paperback textbook on interpretation of laboratory data for the users of the laboratory and laboratory personnel.

The format in the text is uniform throughtout : Name of test, specimen, reference range, method and interpretation. Usually, specimen volume is not given because of the wide variation in requirements form one method to another even within the same laboratory. The reference ranges are those that are generally acceptable but not necessarily applicable to all methods. The methods are selective and not all inclusive. The strength of this text is interpretation of the data.

The first and second editions of this book have been very popular with medical students and residents at East Carolina University School of Medicine and Phoenix Children's Hospital was helpful in the initial development of this book and in subsequent revisions.

PB: Dr. David Beyda made the initial suggestion that I revise this book a project that looked insurmountable several years ago. I have received continued support form Dr. Beyda, as well as Dr. Paul Liu and Dr. David Tellez, an outstanding group of intensive care physicians with whom I work on a daily basis. Numerous attending physicians and pediatric residents at Phoenix Children's Hospital and Maricopa Medical Center have contributed in both general and specific ways to this text.

This work could not have been completed without tremendous support from my mother and the president of the publishing Company, Winona Bakerman. Christina, Molly, Edward and Isaac provided psychological, physical, and intellectual support throughout this project. Beth and John Bakerman provided technical support.

PS: I first met Seymour Bakerman during my residency when he, among many others, taught me Clinical Pathology. Later as a faculty member in his department he continued to teach me and aid in my professional development. We taught together those years, both medical students and in postgraduate seminars. I now consider it a great privilege to aid in the revision of his book. Although there have been many changes, it still retains his character and the framework he built.

I must acknowledge the helpful questioning and inspiration of my fellow staff, the residents, and the medical students I have been associated with and taught over the years; the patience and support of my wife, Lynn, and family as I struggled over many hours of revisions; and the help and friendship of Winona Bakerman and her family.
