Summary

The fourth edition of Basic Pharmacology in Medicine continues the tradition of providing the latest and most authentic information basic to the subject of pharmacology. It is especially designed to supply the educational requisites for the student of medicine enabling him or her to achieve fundamental understanding and information which will make it possible to use drugs rationally and safely for the therapy of disease.
The rate of discovery of new drugs and the advancement of science has accelerated towards the end of the 20th Century. To orient the student to the prospective view of the advances in science as it applies to pharmacology an introductory chapter has been added. Because nutritional agents have assumed increasing importance in therapy a separate section on gastrointestinal drugs deals with vitamins and other drugs useful in treating disorders of the intestinal tract. The section on toxicology has been expanded to three chapters to deal with environmental problems.

All the other chapters have been revised and updated. This has been accomplished by recruiting 28 new authors. Most of the new contributors are pharmacology medical school course directors and hence in a position to have judgement about the latest pertinent knowledge. By eliminating redundant material this book has been kept to reasonable size. The text is also suitable for physicians wishing to keep up to date with the latest scientific information concerning drug therapy. It is also suitable for allied health professionals such as nurse practitioners, physicians assistants and graduate students in pharmacology.

In all rigid attention has been paid to providing a lucid and reliable text which is well illustrated and easy to read. On the other hand complex material is not avoided in the interests of brevity. There are adequate recent references so that the student may explore subjects in depth.
