Summary

Jim Carroll is a thirteen-year-old getting hip on the streets of New York. The Basketball Diaries is his story ...

Between the autumn of 1963 and the summer of 1966 he records his experiences and the result is a frank and hard-hitting chronicle of basketball games and schooldays in a haze of dope, sex and scrapes with the law, a 'Pepsi-cola' heroin habit and weekend trips on LSD. When he read this astonishing journal Jack Kerouac was moved to write, 'At thirteen years of age, Jim Carroll writes better prose than 89 per cent of the novelists working today'. Alternately hilarious and horrifying, The Basketball Diaries caused a sensation when it was first published at the dawn of the seventies - a response that continues today.

This is Jim Carroll prowling New York City, hustling, stealing, getting high, getting hooked, and searching for something pure.
