William H. Schlesinger is James B. Duke Professor in the Departments of Botany and Geology at Duke University. After completing his A.B. at Dartmouth and his Ph.D. at Cornell, Schlesinger began his teaching and research career at Duke in 1980. In 1991, his widely-adopted textbook, Biogeochemistry: An Analysis of Global Change was published by Academic Press. Schlesinger was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1995. He is the U.S. Representative on the NATO Committee on the Science of Global Environmental Change, and has testified before U.S. House and Senate Committees on a variety of issues. Professor Schlesinger is the principal investigator for the Free Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment (FACE) Experiment in the Blackwood Division of the Duke Forest--a project that aims to understand how an entire forest ecosystem will respond to elevated levels of carbon dioxide. He also serves as Principal Investigator for the NSF-sponsored program of Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) in southern New Mexico.
