Summary: BIOLOGY is an authoritative majors textbook with evolution as a unifying theme. In revising the text, McGraw-Hill has consulted extensively with previous users, noted experts and professors in the field. It is distinguished from other texts by its strong emphasis on natural selection and the evolutionary process that explains biodiversity.

New to This Edition

  • Two new authors! Jonathan moreLosos and Susan Singer have joined the author team and have made a significant impact on many segments of the text.
  • Evolution and Ecology. Jonathan Losos has revised the Evolution and Ecology sections of the text, bringing more everyday experimental science into the discussion. To help students understand how the concepts they are learning arose from research, graphs and charts are more plentiful in these chapters. Professor Losos has placed the Ecology and Behavior section at the end of the text, after diversity and physiology, where these chapters are more often taught.
  • Plant Biology. Susan Singer has revised the plant biology chapters. The plant biology sections have benefited from a new approach where plant development takes center stage. A plant developmental biologist, Professor Singer has placed the traditional discussions of evolutionary influences on plant form and function into a developmental context. Thus while evolution is still presented as the underlying explanation for the character of vascular tissue, seeds, flowers, and fruits, the development processes that produce these organs are now given more prominence. This does not lessen the evolutionary character of the treatment, but rather serves to amplify it. Understanding the molecular underpinnings of plant form and function allows students to more clearly understand the evolutionary changes that have shaped them.
  • Three new consultants have aided in the revision of the Seventh Edition to provide thorough content reviews and illustration revisions. Each brings their own special focus as an educator and biologist to this project.
  • Kenneth Mason, Purdue University
  • Randolf Di Domenico, University of Colorado-Boulder
  • Randall Phillis, University of Massachusetts
  • Thoroughly revised and updated content in the Cell (Part II) and Genetics (Part III) units.
  • NEW chapters include:
  • Chapter 17: Genomes. This new chapter describes how researchers sequence entire genomes and how the information is being used.
  • Chapter 20: Cell Biology and Medicine. This new chapter updates progress in understanding cancer and introduces many new advances in cloning and stem cell technology.
  • Chapter 24: Evolution of Genomes and Development. This new chapter explores the wealth of new information on genome sequences and introduces the new and exciting field of "evo/devo", the evolution of development.
NEW topics are discussed within almost every chapter of the Cell and Genetics units. Some of these topics include:
  • Chapter 6, Membrane microdomains
  • Chapter 9, ATP synthetase
  • Chapter 11, Cell cycle control
  • Chapter 15, Eukaryotic transcription
  • Chapter 16, The tools of genetic engineering
  • Chapter 18, Small RNAs; iRNA; RNA editing
  • Chapter 19, Vertebrate embryonic axis formation; Evolution of homeotic genes; Current theories of aging
  • Expanded Plant Biology section (Part VI). Previously combined chapters have been separated to create new chapters in the Seventh Edition: Transport in Plants (37), Plant Nutrition (38), Plant Defense Responses (39)and Sensory Systems in Plants(40).
  • The Diversity section (Part V) has been revised and updated in response to current research.
  • Part VII (Animal Form and Function) has been thoroughly reworked to provide increased clarity for the students.
  • Many new illustrations and summary tables have been incorporated to clarify difficult concepts. In addition, wherever data are presented in graphs, the figure is accompanied by an inquiry question to test the student's understanding.
  • End-of-chapter pedagogy has been expanded to two pages to include a chapter summary and a full page of multiple-choice, art-based, and application questions.
  • Modular Learning System. Unlike any other majors biology textbook, this text is organized so that each chapter is a series of discrete learning modules occupying one or two pages and ending with a summary. This modular presentation makes students focus on concepts, greatly enhancing student learning.
  • Instructors can customize this text using our do-it-yourself website! The Primis Content Center features more than one million items, including this and hundreds of other best-selling McGraw-Hill textbooks, laboratories, case studies, and readings.
