Summary

Intelligent, popular, handsome, and wealthy, sixteen-year-old Nick Andreas is pretty much perfect -- on the outside, at least. What no one knows -- not even his best friend -- is the terror that Nick faces every time he is alone with his father. Then he and Caitlin fall in love, and Nick thinks his problems are over. Caitlin is the one person who he can confide in. But when things start to spiral out of control, Nick must face the fact that he's gotten more from his father than green eyes and money.

Author Bio

Flinn, Alex :

When Alex Flinn was five, her mother informed her that she would be "an author" when she grew up.Never one to follow instructions, Alex studied theater and opera and became a lawyer before finally writing her first novel, Breathing Underwater.Alex lives in Miami with her husband, Gene, and their daughters, Katie and Meredith.

In Her Own Words...

"I write about the things that scare me. When I sat down to write my second novel for teens, I didn't have to go any further than the newspaper. Acts of violence in our schools are terrifying. What is it like, I wondered, to sit in class, not knowing whether the guy beside you might pull out a gun or plant a bomb? What is it like to feel you have reason to commit an act of violence at school-and nothing to lose?

"I dont know the answers. But by writing the story of one teen who reached the breaking point, I've tried to make sense of something that teens are already trying to make sense of. I've tried to understand what makes some teens so fed-up, angry, fearful, and-above all -- isolated that they feel they must strike out. I hope this book will stimulate discussion. Although we cannot excuse the acts of kids like Paul, we must try to understand them. It is the first step toward preventing them."
