Summary

This casebook portrays the rich and arresting nature of disorders that first manifest themselves in childhood and shows how the child's developmental patterns shape the expression of each disorder. Each case is complex and rich and demonstrates how the whole disorder works--from first manifestation through diagnosis and treatment--in a way that a case excerpt within a chapter simply can not do. Throughout the book, the author explores the DSM-IV criteria and demonstrates the interaction between developmental and environmental influences for each disorder. The author draws on an extremely current and varied collection of cases. The breadth of the casebook is demonstrated in the variety of assessment and treatment approaches presented, as well as by the variety of age groups, ethnic backgrounds, and social strata represented in the cases. Each case is unique and individual, and yet, by the time the entire casebook is completed, the reader has developed an understanding of the similarities among the various disorders.

  • Two "Diagnose the Case" exercises give students an opportunity to come up with diagnoses on their own. The first, which appears in Chapter 1, sets up the process of presentation, diagnosis, and treatment followed throughout the book.
  • The "Wrap Up" case is a complex mixed case in which the child has multiple problems. This "Diagnose the Case" exercise allows students to fully appreciate the complexity and challenge of diagnosis.
  • The book treats symptoms, causes, assessment, and treatment in a balanced way.
  • The cases demonstrate that developmental issues and the expression of disorders differ depending on the age, ethnicity, and socio-economic background of the child.
  • Each case is followed by a summary and a set of questions designed to make the students think.
