Cell Movements : From Molecules to Motility - 2nd edition

Cell Movements : From Molecules to Motility (ISBN10: 0815332823; ISBN13: 9780815332824)
ISBN13: 978-0815332824
ISBN10: 0815332823

Summary: Cell Movements provides senior undergraduates, graduates and professionals with an accessible and up-to-date introduction to this exciting area of biological science. The new edition of this popular book features a revised art program abundant with micrographs and line drawings, a comprehensive glossary of terms and end-of-chapter lists of unsolved questions highlighting areas ripe for future investigation.

It begins with a description of movements seen in
the light microscope, giving fascinating accounts of cells that swim, crawl, glide, and display often amazingly complex and idiosyncratic behaviors. The focus then moves to the interior of the cell to describe the molecular mechanisms by which these movements are generated and controlled. The systems of proteins forming the cytoskeleton and their repertoire of dynamic reactions are first introduced, covering the polarized growth and shrinkage of protein polymers, their association into larger structures, and the directed motion of motor proteins. Then specific protein machines such as the ciliary axoneme and the bacterial flagellar motor are selected for an in-depth analysis that includes a review of what has been gleaned from recent experimental developments (such as studies of single molecules) as well as current theories and speculations. Attention is given to how cells organise their internal contents, including how cells split into two during cell division. Biophysical parameters are highlighted throughout, emphasising the importance of diffusion, viscosity, and mechanical forces in determining cellular responses. The final part of the book shows how the mechanisms and principles previously described are integrated in whole cells and organisms. It addresses complex phenomena such as the overall mechanical properties and shapes of cells, the establishment of cell polarity, and the complex movements that occur during embryonic development.
  • All chapters revised and updated. Recent developments that have been incorporated include:
  • The different families of motor proteins and their biophysical properties as revealed by single molecule measurements
  • The cellular movements that occur during the development of complex organisms
  • The mechanism of eucaryotic cell locomotion as revealed by Listeria bacteria.
  • New 'Outstanding Questions' sections at the end of each chapter outline some interesting questions for future research.
  • Completely revised and redrawn artwork program
  • New look reader-friendly text design
  • Comprehensive glossary
