Thought experiments are illustrated by a two-part visual image. One part is a macroscopic view of a familiar experience. The second part shows the microscopic image as a magnification window that portrays the molecular structure or reaction so that students can make the connection between what they see and what is actually happening with the atoms and molecules.
"Molecular Thinking" boxes describe an everyday observation related to the chapter material. The student is asked to explain the observation based on what the molecules are doing.
"Molecular Focus" boxes highlight a molecule relevant to the topic of that chapter. Physical properties and structure of the molecule are provided and its uses described. Featured compounds include calcium carbonate, hydrogen peroxide, ammonia, AZT, retinal, sulfur oxide, ammonium nitrate, and others.
"Molecular Revolution" boxes describe a timely topic of modern research for further exploration.
"What If" boxes focus on topics with societal, political, or ethical implications. Open-ended questions for group discussion conclude each box. Topics include genetic engineering, The Manhattan Project, and government subsidiaries for the development of alternative fuels.
Every chapter contains four types of student exercises: Questions, Problems, Points to Ponder, and Feature Problems and Projects. Questions are primarily qualitative to help students review key concepts from the chapter. Problems are quantitative or analytical, with varying degrees of difficulty, and ask students to apply what they have learned to solve problems. Points to Ponder are open-ended, essay-type questions in which students are asked about the ethical, societal, and political implications of scientific issues. Feature Problems and Projects contain problems with graphics and short projects, often involving web-based inquiry.
In example problems and "Your Turn" exercises the author first solves an example in detail. Students are then given a similar example called "Your Turn," providing an opportunity to practice solving the problems themselves.
