Summary: The main goals of this text are to develop students' appreciation for the molecular world and stress the fundamental role it plays in our daily lives. It also strives to help students understand the major scientific, technological, and environmental issues affecting our society. To accomplish these goals, the author has made extensive efforts to clearly identify and explain connections between the molecular world and macroscopic world as well as between principles an...show mored applications. The Third Edition of CHEMISTRY IN FOCUS adds new pedagogy and technological resources, such as OWL for Liberal Arts, that further enhance learning and appreciation of the molecular world.
NEW! An increased focus on molecular thinking throughout the text helps students to connect the microscopic world with what they see around them.
NEW! Microsoft PowerPoint Slides, created by Jeannine Eddleton of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and University, provide text, art, photos, and tables in an electronic format that is easily exported into other software packages. Additionally, presentations can be customized by importing your own lecture slides or notes.
Thought experiments are illustrated by a two-part visual image. One part is a macroscopic view of a familiar experience. The second part shows the microscopic image as a magnification window that portrays the molecular structure or reaction so that students can make the connection between what they see and what is actually happening with the atoms and molecules.
"Molecular Thinking" boxes describe an everyday observation related to the chapter material. The student is asked to explain the observation based on what the molecules are doing.
"Molecular Focus" boxes highlight a molecule relevant to the topic of that chapter. Physical properties and structure of the molecule are provided and its uses described. Featured compounds include calcium carbonate, hydrogen peroxide, ammonia, AZT, retinal, sulfur oxide, ammonium nitrate, and others.
"Molecular Revolution" boxes describe a timely topic of modern research for further exploration.
"What If" boxes focus on topics with societal, political, or ethical implications. Open-ended questions for group discussion conclude each box. Topics include genetic engineering, The Manhattan Project, and government subsidiaries for the development of alternative fuels.
Every chapter contains four types of student exercises: Questions, Problems, Points to Ponder, and Feature Problems and Projects. Questions are primarily qualitative to help students review key concepts from the chapter. Problems are quantitative or analytical, with varying degrees of difficulty, and ask students to apply what they have learned to solve problems. Points to Ponder are open-ended, essay-type questions in which students are asked about the ethical, societal, and political implications of scientific issues. Feature Problems and Projects contain problems with graphics and short projects, often involving web-based inquiry.
In example problems and "Your Turn" exercises the author first solves an example in detail. Students are then given a similar example called "Your Turn," providing an opportunity to practice solving the problems themselves.
NEW! APPLY YOUR KNOWLEDGE boxes ask students to use a conceptual idea to answer a practical question. These exercises are designed to reinforce the key concepts in the text, develop students' critical thinking skills, and help them relate the material to the world around them.
NEW! ALL of the molecular art in this edition has been updated and enhanced.
NEW! "Chemistry On The Web" sections feature a list of URLs for the websites that are referenced within each chapter and can be easily assigned for further exploration and/or research.
NEW! "Your Turn" answers were moved into an appendix to encourage students to work the "Your Turn" problems before looking at the answer.
NEW! A JoinIn on TurningPoint CD-ROM is available with this new edition. This content for Personal Response Systems, authored by Chris Truitt of Texas Tech University, allows you to transform your classroom and assess your students' progress with instant in-class quizzes and polls. Our exclusive agreement to offer TurningPoint software lets you pose book-specific questions and display students' answers seamlessly within the Microsoft PowerPoint slides of your own lecture, in conjunction with the "clicker" hardware of your choice.
NEW! The Student Book Companion Site is organized by chapter and features chapter-by-chapter online quizzes and weblinks from the Chemistry on the Web section in the text.
NEW! OWL (Online Web-based Learning), our fully customizable and flexible web-based homework management system and assessment tool, is available with the text. With both numerical and chemical parameterization and useful, specific feedback built right in, OWL produces thousands of questions correlated to Tro's text. The OWL system also features a database of simulations and guided tutorials.
NEW! The iLrn Computerized Testbank allows instructors the ability to create, deliver, and customize tests in minutes with questions and problems written specifically for this text.
