Summary: This book supersedes my previous volume on this topic entitled Essentials of International Management: A Cross-Cultural Perspective. As in the previous edition it extracts key concepts on management from a cross-cultural perspective and condenses them into a concise volume. Thus, the amount of description and number of examples given for a particular concept continue to be limited. However, each topic area has been updated with the most current research. Consistent w ...show moreith my earlier approach, the complexity of cross-cultural management is recognized and care has been taken not to speculate when evidence supporting a particular concept or relationship is limited. Rather, the book is extensively referenced and indexed so that the interested reader has ready access to the source of the material presented and can easily follow up on areas of most interest.
In this book, I examine cross-cultural management issues from a predominantly psychological perspective. As opposed to being country specific, this book focuses on the interactions of people from different cultures in organizational settings. That is, the approach used is to understand the effect of culture in a way that can then be applied to a wide variety of cross-cultural interactions in a number of organizational contexts. Students of organizational behavior, industrial and organizational psychology, and social psychology will find many of the topic areas familiar. However, the focus of this book is on application of these concepts to global management.
Section I presents four chapters that provide an essentialbasis for understanding the influence of culture on management. Section II contains three chapters that focus on the roles of decision maker, negotiator, and leader that dominate the activities of global managers. Section III is devoted to some of the challenges that face global managers, which can be informed by a better understanding of intercultural interactions.
The globalization of the business environment that is being driven by technological and economic factors is resulting in an ever-increasing number of cross-cultural interactions in the workplace. Understanding the influence of culture on interpersonal interactions in organizational settings is now a fundamental requirement of effective international management. I hope that this book will be an aid to that understanding. ...show less
