Summary

Designing Preschool Movement Programs will help you develop and run a successful movement program for children ages 3 through 5. It's both a detailed guide for developing a preschool movement curriculum and a resource containing developmentally appropriate movement activities.

Part I emphasizes the importance of movement in educating young children and tells how early exposure to structured movement activities benefits children throughout their lives. You'll find a curriculum foundation for establishing a preschool movement program, whether you work in a day care center, YMCA, community center, or elementary school. Plus there's a list of appropriate equipment for young children, including how to make it or where to buy it.

Part II is the activities portion of the book. You'll find nearly 100 developmentally appropriate activities, organized by skill themes. Tested in early childhood settings for 8 years, these activities are appropriate for you to use in all your classes, whether you're teaching indoors or outdoors, in the classroom or in the gym. Through these activities, children will develop movement skills--hopping, skipping, jumping, rolling, balancing, throwing, and many more. And the activities emphasize proper form and technique, so that kids can learn skills without using speed and accuracy as the only measures of success.

Part III brings it all together, organizing the movement activities into a curriculum. You'll find 8 weeks of sample lesson plans designed to help you plan your own lessons. The examples are planned in segments of 30 minutes, but they can easily be made longer or shorter to fit your situation.

Designing Preschool Movement Programs provides you with both the curriculum and the specific activities you need. Whether you're developing a new program or working to improve an existing one, this book is an invaluable guide for everyone who teaches preschool children.
