Summary

Hollows basing her analysis on ideas grounded in the "second-wave" feminism that emerged in the 1960s and 70s, surveys the engagement of feminism with academic studies of popular culture and with the popular itself. She argues that there has been a shift from a situation in which feminists positioned themselves as outside of and against the popular to one in which feminists have considered not only how different popular forms and practices may privilege feminine practices that have traditionally been devalued, but also explored how feminism itself has entered the popular.
