Summary: German in Review is an intermediate-level review grammar that for almost twenty years has been the leading German reference grammar. Appropriate for third- and fourth-semester college classes, the main textbook of the Third Edition contains sixteen chapters, each covering a specific grammar topic. Most of these chapters are sub-divided into levels, beginning with the most basic principles, then proceeding to more advanced material. Each level concludes with a ...show moreseries of exercises, usually moving from strictly controlled exercises on a single aspect of the topic, to combination exercises ("Mixed Exercises"), and finally to English-to-German translation activities ("Express in German"). A new Student Manual, closely tied to the main text, provides a greater variety of activities that allow students to use the targeted structures in meaningful situations and contexts. The Student Manual is intended for in-class use, although students can also do the activities at home.
Self-study activities and exercises allow students to prepare in advance and come into the classroom on an equal footing with others. This reduces or even eliminates unevenness or variance in the studentsá backgrounds, which is so common in intermediate courses.
Clear, step-by-step grammar explanations in the student text are organized into levels. The presentations are complete and systematic, with nothing assumed. This approach allows students either to begin with the most basic aspects of any given topic or to proceed immediately to more advanced or new material.
Carefully controlled and sequenced exercises in the student text facilitate mastery of the topic. These exercises can also serve as a diagnostic tool for instructors.
Student Manual allows students to use the grammar points they have mastered in the student text in a broader range of circumstances. These exercises pick up where those in the main text leave off, leading students along a continuum of language practice and use--from tightly controlled formats to open situations where they are encouraged to use the language freely and creatively.
Guided composition activities and reading passages that use the targeted grammar points in meaningful contexts are provided in the Student Manual as well.
Flexibility, the main textbook can be used in an intermediate grammar course, as a supplemental text in literature or conversation courses, or as a reference tool for students at home. Furthermore, the modular approach of German in Review allows instructors to construct their own syllabi, since the chapters can be used in any sequence.
As an aid to self-study, answer keys will be provided on the German in Review World Wide Web Site for both the student text and the Student Manual.
The Third Edition uses the new spelling reform, and also provides an overview of the reform in the Appendix. ...show less
