ISBN13: 978-0716739067
ISBN10: 0716739062

Summary: This authoritative text portrays the cultural geography of the world today. Organized according to a unique thematic framework, it encourages students to consider a wide range of topics and view them from five different perspectives.

Thematic Approach
The five themes of The Human Mosaic--culture region, cultural diffusion, cultural ecology, cultural interaction, and cultural landscape--are introduced and explained in the first chapter and serve as the ...show moreframework for the topical chapters that follow. Each theme is applied to a variety of geographical topics: demography, agriculture, the city, religion, language, ethnicity, politics, industry, folk and popular culture. Through this thematic organization, students are able to relate to the most important aspects of cultural geography at every point in the text. Features :

  • Authoritative presentation and innovative pedagogy distinguish The Human Mosaic among geography textbooks:
  • Authoritative Author Team. Written by two of geography's most respected scholars, The Human Mosaic thoughtfully introduces students to human geography by presenting the latest research and carefully examining the complexities and nuances of individual cultures.
  • Engaging Writing Style. The authors' skillful use of descriptive language grabs students' attention and help them develop a sense of what makes individual cultures distinct and unique.
  • Trusted Map and Photo Program. Time-tested, beautifully crafted maps impart geographic data clearly and simply, giving students the chance to develop their skill at analyzing spatial data. In most cases, the accompanying figure captions contain questions prompting students to think more deeply about the subject matter. Thus the maps and photos serve as vital parts of the learning process.
  • Reflecting on Geography Questions. Throughout each the chapter, students encounter questions asking them to reflect on issues with which geographers grapple. These questions are intended to help students apply what they have just learned to real world situations and to help develop critical thinking skills.
  • Focus On Boxes. Appearing two or three times per chapter, these boxed readings present illustrative examples or highlight studies that students will find interesting.
  • Geography Profiles. Interspersed throughout the text, these profiles present biographical sketches of famous and important contributors to cultural geography, such as Carl Ritter and Ellen Churchill Semple.
New to this Edition :
  • New "Seeing Geography" Essay Each chapter now opens with a photograph or a map illustrating the five themes used throughout the text. Each thematic photo or map is revisited at the end of the chapter in an analytical essay titled "Seeing Geography." The "Seeing Geography" essay prompts students to analyze photographs the same ways they analyze maps-through the unique geographical lenses of the five themes. See annotated table of contents below for maps/photos for each essay.

  • New Chapters Chapter 12, One World or Many? The Cultural Geography of the Future
This entirely new chapter is devoted to examining globalization and its impact on cultures around the world. The authors question current assumptions about globalization and in the process uncover many of the pros and cons associated with this international force. In addition, coverage of globalization has been incorporated in every chapter.
  • Chapter 2, Parallel Worlds: Two Types of Culture Formerly two separate chapters (7 and 8), the authors have merged and streamlined the topics of folk and popular cultures, introducing them earlier in the text. The newly abridged treatment contrasts these fundamentally different ways of life.
Reorganized Table of Contents
In the Ninth Edition, the authors have reordered chapters to create a more logical flow of topics. The new organization makes the concepts and connections between chapters more relevant to the chapters that succeed them:
NEW! Chapter 2, Parallel Worlds: Two Types of Culture (formerly chapters 7 and 8). By combining coverage of folk and popular cultures and covering the material early, the book introduces students to important geographic concepts they will apply throughout the remaining chapters.
Chapter 3, The Geography of Religion: Spaces and Places of Faith (formerly chapter 6) has been moved up to highlight current events involving religious conflict and to prepare students for subsequent chapters on ethnicity and politics.
Chapter 5, Ethnic Geography: Homelands and Ghettos (formerly chapter 9) now follows the chapters on religion and language (now chapter 4), two topics that form much of the bases for understanding ethnicity.
Chapter 6, Political Geography: A Divided World (formerly chapter 4) now follows coverage of religion, language, and ethnicity, so students will be familiar with these essential contexts before encountering the complexities of geopolitics.
Chapter 7, Geodemography: Peopling the Earth (formerly chapter 2) now leads into Chapter 8, Agricultural Geography: Food from the Good Earth (formerly chapter 3), and Chapter 9, Industries: A Faustian Bargain (formerly chapter 12). This prepares students to confront issues such as feeding the world's population and how people from different cultures sustain their livelihoods in the context of demographic concepts.
NEW! Chapter 12, One World or Many? The Cultural Geography of the Future, with its focus on globalization, provides a fitting and provocative capstone for the text.
See the annotated table of contents below for more details about updated coverage in the new edition.

Revised Map Program
To accommodate the changes of a world in flux, the authoritative map program retains its characteristic elegance and clarity while conferring the latest geographic information.

Recommended Readings and Relevant Journals lists
Each chapter concludes with an annotated lists of 10 carefully selected recommended books, offering students the opportunity to explore in more depth topics that are of interest to them. Some chapters also include a annotated list of relevant journals.
