Summary

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is an autobiographical book about the life of former slave, Harriet Jacobs. Being a mulatto slave, she was owned by a tavern owner named John Horniblow. Harriet would later be willed to relatives who would sexually harass her. Harriet Jacobs is also well known for having a consensual relationship and two children with a white Congressman, Samuel Tredwell Sawyer. After an escape from her unbearable conditions, Jacobs escaped on a boat and would live her life as a free woman in New York City. Harriet Jacobs became well-known as a writer and her life story was published in Horace Greeley's New York Tribune. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is highly recommended for those who are interested in the history of slavery and civil rights in the United States of America as well as those who are intertested in reading first hand about the life of Harriet Jacobs.
