Invitation to Organic Chemistry - 99 edition

Invitation to Organic Chemistry (ISBN10: 0763704326; ISBN13: 9780763704322)
ISBN13: 978-0763704322
ISBN10: 0763704326

Summary: The goal of Invitation to Organic Chemistry is to teach students an elementary understanding of organic chemistry in order to support study in their chosen career field (such as nursing, agricultural sciences, biology, allied health sciences, pharmacy, etc.). Rather than being a truncated two-semester text, it has been designed specifically for the shorter one-semester, or one- or two-quarter course at the college level. Its approach is to present only that material ...show morewhich is essential for understanding the elementary workings of organic chemistry. This encourages a more thorough understanding of the information as opposed to memorizing, and then forgetting, a larger body of it. It attempts to make organic chemistry interesting and relevant, and eases students into new concepts by moving logically and gradually from one topic to the next.

Classroom management is made easier with the Instructor's ToolKit CD-ROM, available free to adopters. This valuable resource contains full color art files from the book, PowerPoint lecture outline slides, links to interactive molecules and mechanism movies, a computerized test bank consisting of over 800 questions, and a series of over 40 Lecture Demonstrations, providing instructors with easy-to-do experiments.

Supported by a text-specific web site, Organic Online (www.jbpub.com/organic-online), linking the text's content to a wealth of related resources on the Internet. Appropriate links are identified by icons in the text's margins. Once at the Organic Online web site students are given the opportunity to: - Take online quizzes written by the author. - Visit the Career Resource Center to explore the various career opportunities discussed in the main text. - Utilize the Chem Web Explorations. Distinguished by the explorer icon in the text, these provide specific links relating to the concepts being studied. Questions are posed as a way of guiding students and giving them a greater understanding of the concepts. - View the Gallery of Chime Molecules, which showcases over 300 different examples of molecules and allows students to move from simple molecules such as water to more complex ones such as buckminsterfullerine. Each molecule can be interactively observed in several formats, including wire frame, ball and stick, and space filler; in 2- and 3-dimensional forms; and can be rotated to view from all angles. Invitation to Organic Chemistry covers single bond chemistry almost exclusively until Chapter 6, when double and triple bonds are introduced. This organization allows students to become comfortable with the simpler aspects of organic chemistry before moving on to the more complex ones.

80 unique 'How to Solve a Problem' features are included throughout the text and walk students through a problem as if the author were thinking out loud. They are intended to help students learn how to solve problems, increasing their ability to study independently (see pages 33, 108, 310, 514).

53 'Chemistry at Work' boxes place chemistry in several contexts including In the Marketplace, In the Body, In Nature, and In the Environment. This special feature is designed to help students connect chemistry with the real world, showing them the relevance of the material they are studying (see pages 124, 245, 560).

Coverage of spectroscopy (Chapter 11) is held until after aromatics are discussed so that this important family of compounds can be included in the discussion.

Radical chemistry has been gathered together in one chapter (Chapter 10) where the relation between mechanisms is demonstrated and therefore more readily understood by students.

Each functional group includes a section on important and interesting examples of compounds containing that functional group. Rather than present such compounds at the beginning of chapters before the student has an appreciation for the chemistry involved, all such sections appear at the ends of chapters.

Essential coverage of the standard biological chemicals has been incorporated into chapters that include the actual functional groups involved. This approach has the advantage of presenting interesting topics combined with regular functional group chemistry relatively early on in order to create interest in the student. Additionally, Chapter 19 (Introduction to Biological Chemistry) covers three topics as further examples of biological chemistry (nucleic acids, metabolism, and chemical therapies).
