Summary

Learning Activities for Life Span Motor Development Third Edition has been completely reorganized and expanded. It corresponds directly to the reorganized and updated textbook Life Span Motor Development, third edition. The learning activity guide, which replaces the old lab manual, features 49 learning experiences that may be used without laboratory equipment to take students through the procedures for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data in motor development.

Each chapter in the textbook is now represented by a chapter in the learning activity guide, and each chapter in the learning activity guide has at least one learning experience. The learning activities provide students with hands-on experience in motor development, which allows students to experience, understand, and apply the topics presented in each chapter of the textbook. Not only can the activity guide be used in a lab setting, but it also can be used by the instructor for tests and homework assignments. The ready-made activities make teaching easier for instructors by reducing planning time and focusing instructors' attention on the most important elements in the textbook.

A wide variety of typical motor development measurement tools and issues have been addressed in this edition. Activities cover these topics:

  • How to graph a velocity curve
  • How to take anthropometric measurements
  • How to estimate skeletal age
  • How to identify the motor milestones during infancy and toddlerhood
  • How to developmentally sequence skills based on the principles of motion and stability
  • How to test perceptual-motor development
  • How body scaling may be used to promote safety
  • Whether gender role stereotyping exists
  • How to assess physical fitness, including body composition measures, flexibility, and so forth

A major addition to this third edition is an interactive CD-ROM. It contains over 100 video clips that detail the characteristic developmental sequences for both learning and assessing fundamental motor skills. The CD-ROM provides an ideal way to train students to assess fundamental motor skills and is an educational tool that helps students learn how to observe and analyze fundamental movement. The developmental sequence clips are divided into two sets. The first set guides students through the clips and provides the correct answers. The second set contains open-ended clips without answers which instructors can use to test students.

The video clips of developmental sequences on the CD-ROM benefit instructors tremendously because they no longer have to arrange a live experience for the students. Students benefit from seeing the sequences because they can play the same sequences over and over and view the sequences in slow motion.

This learning activity guide helps students understand and apply the model of constraints approach that was introduced in the third edition of the undergraduate textbook Life Span Motor Development. Students will be challenged to identify the influence of the various interactions possible among individual, environment, and task constraints within a movement context.
