Summary

Ed Martin and Charles Parker developed the Mastering Today's Software (MTS) series to introduce today's students to the basics of software applications as well as to show how they can successfully be applied at home, school or in the business world.

  • MTS Approach. Each MTS manual follows the same basic approach: Each Unit is organized into a series of Mastery Sets where students read a concise explanation of the function, then they perform the function through a step-by-step tutorial. Each Mastery Set ends with a hands-on series of Checkpoints for further review. At the end of each Unit, students are given more practice through a variety of end-of-unit exercises.
  • Color as a Learning Tool. In the MTS Series, color means more than just flash! Each step is numbered in green for easy identification. Within each step, text or commands to type appear in orange. Single keys to be pressed are shown in yellow boxes, and Checkpoint reviews are in red.
  • Sharing and Integrating Information. MTS takes advantage of the features in today's software that make integration with other applications and the Web a reality. Each manual ends with a Mastery Set illustrating integrating and sharing information.
  • Checkpoints, Tips, and Marginal Icons. Throughout each manual, a variety of tools enhance student learning. At the end of Mastery Set, Checkpoints provide a quick review. Boxed tips give warnings, hints, or insights. Toolbar buttons located in the margins next to the hands-on steps are posted whenever appropriate.
  • Mastery Cases. In addition to each unit's extensive number of exercises, material can also be reinforced with the assignment of a mastery case. Each unit concludes with three cases that cover school, business, and home applications. These open-ended cases challenge students to solve a problem from scratch rather than follow step-by-step instructions.
  • What's New. Go to this page at the beginning of each manual to find out at a glance some of the major changes of the particular release of the software. Instructors and students who are familiar with a previous version of the software can quickly identify enhanced features.
  • Reference Appendix. Each MTS manual ends with its own handy reference appendix that summarizes important keystrokes and provides alphabetical listings of critical operations.
  • Custom Options. The entire MTS series is set up as part of Harcourt's custom publishing program, EXACT, which allows you to choose any combination of texts along with binding and packaging preferences.
