Summary

Traditionally, the study of earthquakes has been the realm of seismologists and the study of faults that of geologists. This distinction has become softened over the past twenty years during which time it has become clear that earthquakes are the result of dynamic slip on faults. The Mechanics of Earthquakes and Faulting presents an interdisciplinary view of earthquakes and faulting in which the main observations from seismology, geology, and geodesy are reviewed and interpreted in terms of rock mechanics principles. There are chapters on the mechanics of brittle fracture and rock friction, fracture mechanics (with special emphasis on shear cracks), the constitutive laws of rock friction, observations of natural phenomena, the statics of faulting, dynamic faulting, the seismic cycle, seismotectonics, and important research on earthquake prediction and hazards. The author's aim is to develop an overall understanding and appreciation of the mechanics of faulting processes rather than rehearsing the methods used to study the subject. Mathematics are kept simple and descriptive aspects of the subject are emphasized. Each topic is illustrated with the key observational data taken from many diverse tectonic settings. A comprehensive bibliography of over 1,200 items is included for those interested in pursuing these topics in greater depth.
