Miller, Robert Ryal :
Robert Ryal Miller, historian and retired professor of history, received the Ph.D. degree in history from the University of California, Berkeley. His special fields of interest include Mexican and Latin American history and the history of California and the American West. He has written many books and articles on these subjects. Shamrock and Sword, Juan Alvarado, Governor of California, 1836-1842, and Daily Life in Colonial Mexico: The Journey of Friar Illarione Da Bergamo, 1761-1768, edited by Robert Ryal Miller and William J. Orr also published by the University of Oklahoma Press.
''This well-written, tastefully illustrated history of Mexico surveys the social, cultural and political climate of the ancient Indian civilizations, the colonial period, and nineteenth- and twentieth-century Mexico. The inclusion of many contemporary accounts of witnesses to each era adds color and dimension to this brief history, which should appeal to the general reader as well as the college student.''
-- Current History.
''Professor Robert Ryal Miller takes the burden of explanation upon his capable shoulders and proceeds to carry us towards a better understanding of Mexico's long history....To be able to condense so many events into a single comprehensible volume is a feat worthy of someone who has spent years researching and traveling throughout the region in question. As we find ourselves turning pages, waiting to find out what happens next, we are witnessing the work of a true scholar.''
-- New York Tribune
''This is a superb synthesis of Mexico's complex history. It incorporates the results of two decades of very productive research by this author and others....A highly readable and objective text that should appeal to general readers.''
