Jones, Maitland Jr. : Princeton University

Maitland Jones, Jr., is David B. Jones Professor of Chemistry at Princeton University. His undergraduate and graduate degrees are from Yale University. A long-time teacher of the organic chemistry course at Princeton, he is also an internationally recognized research scientist. His special field of expertise is reactive intermediates, and within that subfield, he is particularly interested in carbenes. He is considered one of the world's leading authorities on this fundamentally important subject, and he regularly travels far and wide, lecturing on the current state of his research.

Chapter 1: Atoms and Molecules; Orbitals and Bonding
Combines old Chapters 1 & 2. Omitted is the lengthy discussion of the hypothetical "H4" molecule.
Added are two new sections: 1.7: An Introduction to Reactivity: Acids and Bases (requested by a
number of readers) and 1.8: Quantum Mechanics and Babies (an anecdote that tries to show the
connection between quantum mechanics and the "real world").
Chapter 2: Alkanes
New section heading, 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, features a short preview of
spectroscopy. Also, the former boxed feature on methane has been expanded into a full-scale section
on Alkanes as Biomolecules.
Chapter 3: Alkenes and Alkynes
A new section, Alkenes and Biology, begins a cross-chapter examination of the biochemical formation
of carbon-carbon bonds.
Chapter 4: Stereochemistry
Another new "bio" section, Thalidomide: The Consequences of Being Wrong-Handed, examines the
real-world effects of using the wrong enantiomer of a once-common drug.
Chapter 5: Rings
The former box on adamantanes has been combined with a preexisting section to form an expanded
discussion of adamantenes in both materials science (diamonds) and human biology (anti-viral drugs).
Chapter 6: Substitution and Elimination Reactions: The SN1, SN2, E1, and E2 Reactions
A new section, The SN2 Reaction in Biochemistry, uses alkalated DNA as an example of the possible
negative side-effects of the SN 2 reaction.
Chapter 7: Equilibria
The former box on aconitase has been expanded into a new section: Enzymes and Reaction Rates.
Chapter 8: Additions to Alkenes 1
A new section, Rearrangements in Biological Processes, carries forward the new biochemical theme
introduced in Chapter 3.
Chapter 9: Additions to Alkenes 2; Additions to Alkynes
Another new section in the sequence started in Chapter 3 and continued in Chapter 8, titled
Three-Membered Rings in Biochemistry, incorporates material formerly found in the box on pyrethrins.
Chapter 10: Radical Reactions
The box on vitamin E has been expanded into a new section: Radicals in Your Body: Do Free Radicals
