Summary

This new book brings an in depth view of the general principles of pharmacology and those medications specifically used in dentistry. It also reviews the basic pharmacology of medications that the patient may be taking with emphasis on dental effects/concerns of those medications or illnesses. The first section serves as an introduction to pharmacology and the role a dental hygienist plays in dental pharmacology. The second section reviews medications that are used in dentistry and each chapter focuses on mechanisms of action, pharmacology, dental and medical uses, adverse reactions, drug interactions, and dental concerns. Section three covers patient medications and the possible side-effects or concerns associated with drug combinations. Finally, section four reviews the treatment of medical emergencies in the dental office, substance abuse and the effect of drugs on pregnancy. The use of tables and figures as well as review questions and case studies offers the student a well-rounded learning structure.

  • focus on dental concerns provides students with the necessary information to avoid interactions and adverse reactions
  • glossary, and appendix includes list of both generic and trade drug names
  • case studies and associated questions relate content to clinical practice
  • review questions help students measure their understanding of the critical principles in each chapter
  • tables summarize the crucial drug data in each chapter and their organization by drug therapeutic class, helping to reinforce students' categorization of this information
