The second edition of this publication was reviewed by Jackie Miller, RHIA, CPC, in the February 17, 2003 issue of Advance for Health Information Professionals. Her comments include the following:

Perhaps the best feature of this book, and the one that makes it such a valuable tool, is its depth of detail. For example, the section on maternity care contains extensive descriptions of obstetrical services, an explanation of the global obstetric package and several coding scenarios involving split care.

This thoroughness extends even to specialties that are typically not well covered in a general text, such as anesthesiology, pathology and interventional radiology. For example, the anesthesia section contains a discussion of payer preferences regarding use of anesthesia codes vs. surgical codes.

Many coders will find the section on modifiers to be extremely helpful. It covers modifier usage for both professional service and hospital reporting, and also includes comments on applicable Medicare guidelines.

Principles of CPT Coding is designed to be used by community colleges, career colleges, and vocational school programs for training. It is an excellent training tool for independent study or for those who want a comprehensive coding reference for office use. This text is also ideal for coders who are preparing for a certification exam.
