The purpose of the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) is to ensure that candidates for Registered Nursing licensure are qualified to practice safe, effective, entry-level nursing care. Passing the NCLEX is a crucial step in your nursing career. Sandra Smith's Review for NCLEX-RN, written to assist you to prepare for and pass this examination, summarizes in concise outline format the essential nursing content that you must know in order to pass the NCLEX. The content is supplemented by practice questions, providing you the opportunity to test your mastery over nursing theory, principles, and interventions.
The tenth edition of this popular book includes all the refinements that have been incorporated into prior editions with revisions, updates, deletions, and new, expanded material as appropriate. It also reflects the author's university teaching experience and feedback from thousands of candidates who attended the Sandra Smith Review Courses throughout the United States for more than 20 years. Highly qualified nurse educators and clinicians also contributed new test questions and assisted with updating the pertinent material.
Sandra Smith's Review for NCLEX RN is a new millennium marriage of two best-selling Sandra Smith books, the former "content review" and a separate publication called Review Questions for NCLEX RN. Combining these two books into one provides you with both a comprehensive review of nursing content and a very substantial question bank consisting of clinical practice questions and simulated NCLEX-RN exams.
The first chapter is divided into three sections: NCLEX background, study and review guidelines, and test-taking strategies.
The major portion of the book consists of a comprehensive nursing content review organized by clinical area: medical/surgical, maternity, pediatric, and psychiatric nursing. Additional chapters focus on other important subjects, such as pharmacology, laboratory tests, oncology, infection control, nursing through the life cycle, nutrition, management principles, and legal issues.
To assist your review process to be efficient and effective, the nursing content is presented in an outline format. This enables the author to identify and prioritize essential clinical information clearly and concisely. As you progress from subject to subject, you will note that the consistent page design allows you to easily recognize the main topics and their subtopics.
Nursing content in each chapter is organized using the nursing process as the basic framework. The author emphasizes the assessment and implementation steps, because the NCLEX will require you to demonstrate your ability to effectively assess a situation and then implement an appropriate action.
Throughout the text, a special icon directs your attention to important content for NCLEX preparation. If the icon appears near a major section of content, it means that the entire section is important. Another icon may appear under the same heading indicating especially important material. For example, preceding the medication section for the condition of epilepsy, an icon appears. A second icon, appearing next to the drug, Dilantin, identifies specifically important data within that section.
When selecting items for your test, the NCLEX draws upon a test pool containing thousands of questions. Any material in this book could be phrased as a question, so focusing your review exclusively on the icon topics would not be a wise preparation strategy. This text is now in its successful tenth edition. Each edition has been revised with the assistance of feedback from candidates who have taken the NCLEX; thus, there is little extraneous or useless information.
Practice questions are integrated throughout the book to enable you to check your level of understanding of each chapter's contents, or, in the medical/surgical chapter, the material in each section. Answers with rationales are included, along with coding for nursing process, client need, and cognitive level.
Review the material, spending a little extra time on the icon areas; answer the practice questions that follow each section or chapter; and then review content again if you identify areas of weakness. Finally, take the comprehensive tests at the end of the book. Use the questions on the CD-ROM as a final step in your preparation for NCLEX.
The two simulated NCLEX examinations at the back of this book and the additional practice questions on the CD-ROM provide you with substantial opportunity to measure your mastery of the subject matter. The answer rationales throughout the book and on the CD-ROM will reinforce your understanding of the principles that underlie each question. Studying rationales for questions missed gives you a learning opportunity. Studying rationales for questions that you answered correctly reinforces your knowledge and understanding. As your understanding increases, so will your confidence.
The author wishes to thank the contributing authors and many others who assisted with the development of this and the nine earlier editions. Because of their valuable contributions, this review package will continue to be a valuable resource for RN licensure candidates as they prepare to pass the NCLEX-RN.
