'It was proclaimed throughout the country, that all interested should be at Coimbra on a certain day.when the master of Avis would be folemnly., crowned king of Portugal. All those of his party, .and, considering the size of the country, it was a numerous body, attended the coronation, which Was persormed by the bishops and prelates with C c 4 great great pomp, in the cathedral Church of Coimbra dedicated to St. Mary, on Trinity-day in the year of grace 1384. The king on that day created sixty knights, as well of his own as from foreign countries. There were magnisicent sestivals at Coimbra, which lasted for two or three days. The barons, counts, knights and squires, who held siess of the crown, renewed their homage; and the king swore to govern the realm with justice, and to maintain all their rights. The people swore to obey faithsully the king and his heirs after him, whether male or semale, and never to desert him until death. Thus passed the coronation of the king of Portugal.
