Statistics : A First Course / With Data CD-ROM - 6th edition

by Donald Sanders and Robert Smidt

Statistics : A First Course / With Data CD-ROM (ISBN10: 0072332174; ISBN13: 9780072332179)
ISBN13: 978-0072332179
ISBN10: 0072332174

Summary: The main difference between this text and many others is that an attempt is made here to present material in a rather relaxed and informal way without omitting important concepts; to demonstrate the wide range of relevant issues and questions that can be addressed with the help of statistical analysis techniques by presenting over 1,750 realistic problems of the type that are dealt with all the time in health car, business, and economics, the social and physical scie ...show morences, engineering, education, and leisure activities; to convince your students that statistics is "do-able"by including real data that students have collected and analyzed for class assignments and projects; to utilize an intuitive and/or commonsense approach (and an occasional humorous situation or ridiculous name) to develop concepts whenever possible. Statistics: A First Course employs widely available, inexpensive technologies--particularly Minitab and the TI-83 graphing calculator--in order to reduce the drudgery (and potential for error!) of hand calculations and to allow for some exploration of concepts. we also explore the use of the World Wide Web to collect data, providing students with the means to obtain up-to-date information without leaving their desks. In short, this book is written to communicate with students rather than to lecture to them, and its intent is to convince readers that the study of statistics can be a lively, interesting, and rewarding experience!

Features:

  • There are many more real data examples and exercises! There are now problems that include the use of the Internet and an increased reliance on statistical software. The coverage has expanded to include instructions for the windows version of Minitab (which is very similar to the Mac version) and the TI-83 graphing calculator. And, if a technique is rarely if ever done by hand and there are no pedagogical reasons for covering its calculations, the computations have been de-emphasized while computer/calculator coverage has been expanded.
  • Every copy of Statistics: A First Course comes with a data CD that includes data from tables, examples, and exercises throughout the text. The data files are named descriptively; for instance the data that accompanies Example 3.13, which concerns incidence of AIDS in the countries of North America and South America, is in a file titled "AIDSAmer." Beside each example or exercise in the text for which data is provided, the name of the corresponding data file is given (in parentheses). Data files are provided on the CD.
  • A Looking Ahead section previews the contents of each chapter and lists the learning objectives for the chapter.
  • At least four or more Statistics in Action minicases are included in each chapter, and each minicase is keyed with an icon that idenifies it as being in one of the following categories: (1)Business/Economics, (2)Physical Science/Engineering, (3) Health, (4) Social Science, (5)Education, and (6)Leisure Activities.
  • There are numerous real-data examples and exercises in each chapter. Examples and exercises based on data that have been successfully analyzed (and in some cases collected) by college students appear frequently.
  • Important terms are introduced in boldface type and are defined in color-shaded boxes. Important formulas are also boxed and numbered.
  • An Exercises section presents many hundreds of new and "real-world" problems to help student gain additional practice and confidence.
  • The Data CD-ROM is a hybrid that will work on both Windows and MAC.
  • The use of Minitab and the TI-83 graphing calculator to support computing, analysis, and decision-making efforts is demonstrated in many example problems.
  • Self-Testing Review problems that support the learning objectives are provided at the end of each section, to help students master the material. answers to odd-numbered Self-Testing Review problems are provided at the end of each chapter.
  • Logic flowcharts, with procedural steps outlined in color, are used in most chapters, and these charts are often easier for students to follow that narrative summaries,
  • A Looking Back section addresses the chapter learning objectives by summarizing the main points presented in the chapter.
