Ten Steps to Building College Reading Skills (ISBN10: 1591940370; ISBN13: 9781591940371)
ISBN13: 978-1591940371
ISBN10: 1591940370

Summary: The third edition will be available through summer 2005.

Description: A higher basic developmental text than Groundwork for College Reading, this popular book covers ten basic reading skills that are widely recognized to be essential for sound comprehension. Twenty reading selections accompany the skills.

Key features:

1. Focus on the basics. Ten Steps to Building College Reading Skills explains in an extremely clear, step-by-step wa ...show morey ten word and reading skills that are widely recognized as essential for sound comprehension. Many examples, practices, tests, and instances of feedback are provided to ensure that students understand and master each skill. In general, the focus is on teaching the skills, not just on explaining or testing them.

2. Frequent practice and feedback. Students can get immediate feedback on the practice exercises in Part I by turning to the limited answer key at the back of the book. This limited answer key increases the active role that students take in their own learning; they are likely to use it in an honest and positive way if they know they will be tested on the many activities and selections for which answers are not provided. The answers to the review and mastery tests in Part I and the readings in Part II are in the Instructor's Edition as well as in the Instructor's Manual. They can be easily copied from the IM and passed out at the teacher's discretion.

3. High interest level. The readings in the book have been chosen not only for the appropriateness of their reading level but also for their compelling content. They should engage teachers and students alike.

4. Integration of skills. Students do more than learn the skills individually in Part I. They also learn to apply the skills together through the reading selections that close the chapters in Part I, the combined-skills "Active Reading" practices and tests in Chapter 10, and the readings in Part II. They become effective readers and thinkers through a good deal of practice in applying a combination of skills.

New to this Edition:
A new first chapter, "Clear Thinking." This chapter is full of high-interest activities that will help your students learn the basics of clear and logical thinking.

A new final chapter, "Active Reading." This chapter will help students (many of whom are passive readers) practice becoming active readers. They are asked to apply all of the key comprehension skills they just learned to a series of short passages like those in standardized tests. Then, in the next part of the book (Part II: Ten Reading Selections), they practice applying all of the key comprehension skills to longer readings. Such integrated skills practice is an essential part of making students better readers.

Major chapter revisions. The vocabulary in context chapter, for example, has been enlarged, and all of the mastery tests are new. The treatments of main ideas and inferences have been expanded. The two chapters on supporting details have been reduced to one, with the focus now placed on outlining and mapping major details. The chapters on relationships make it much easier for students to see the connection between transitions and patterns of organization.

Relocation of the mastery tests. For greater ease of use, the six mastery tests for each skill now immediately follow the chapter on that skill.

Fresh materials. Nine of the twenty-five readings in the book are new, as are about forty percent of the practice materials. In choosing new material, the touchstones have been "Is it truly interesting?" and "Does it clearly teach the skill or skills in question?"

New design elements. To increase readability, a slightly larger typeface than the one in the previous edition has been used for the text, and a two-column format is now used for the reading selections.

Promotion of the habit of reading. New to the book is a motivational essay titled "Reading to Survive" that will inspire students both to develop the reading habit and to do their best in facing the challenges and difficulties of their lives. The essay features the story of Ryan Klootwyk, a recent winner of the Townsend Press scholarship contest. Also included as an incentive for students is a free book offer. ...show less
