Learn more about good condition here.
Do used textbooks come with CDs/DVDs?
Yes. If you order a used textbook that comes with a CD or DVD, you'll receive those in your shipment. If supplemental items are included they will be listed in the title.

How does textbook rental work?
Rental is when you pay to use your book just for a semester and then send it back in by its due date. It's often a good choice for students who want to save money up-front on the books that they know they won't want to keep. Learn more about rental here.

Buying Textbooks

Finding textbooks
We make it easy to find the right textbook at the right price. Here are a few tips for searching on Textbooks.com:
  • Searching by ISBN is the fastest, most accurate way to find your textbook. The ISBN may be 10 or 13 digits. You can obtain the ISBN from your instructor or syllabus.
  • Access codes should ONLY be ordered by ISBN since titles may be similar.
  • When searching by keyword:
    • Use single words; complex phrases can limit your results.
    • Remove punctuation like quotation marks or apostrophes.
    • Search by author's last name only; if there is more than one author, try using only the first author's last name.
Used textbook condition
We hand-inspect every used textbook to ensure good condition. A textbook in "good condition" is always free from:
  • Stains
  • Water damage
  • Missing, loose or torn pages/cover
  • Excessive writing
  • Broken spine
  • Torn or damaged binding

Used textbooks range in quality from a book owned only once before to one that's comfortably worn. You can expect minor signs of wear and tear, such as:

  • Writing
  • Highlighting (from a little to a lot)
  • Rounded or dog-eared corners
  • Minor scrapes or scratches
  • Faded cover art
  • Creased pages

Please contact us within 30 days if your book is not up to these conditions.

CDs, access codes, and other additional components
  • If additional components - such as workbooks, study guides, etc. - are included with your textbook, they'll be listed in the title.
  • Used textbooks do come with CDs, if it is listed in the title. If you order a used textbook that comes with a CD, you'll receive the CD with your shipment.
  • Only new textbooks come with access codes, if it is listed in the title. If you want to receive a one-time use access code with your textbook, you must order your textbook "new".
  • Used textbooks do NOT come with access codes. You may be able to purchase the access code separately from Textbooks.com, or you can buy one directly from the publisher.
  • Rental textbooks do NOT come with access codes.
Guaranteed Cash Back
All over Textbooks.com, thousands of best-selling textbooks are labeled as "Guaranteed Cash Back". Renting Textbooks

Finding rental textbooks

Search for your textbook as usual, and then select the "Rental" option. You'll pay to use that textbook only for the rental period indicated. Once the rental period ends, you send your book back.

When are my rental textbooks due?

Before you place your order, take note of when your textbook is due - the due date is listed on the textbook's product page and also in checkout. NOTE: The "due date" is the date by which your return must be postmarked and shipped.

To check the due date of a textbook that you're currently renting, log into your account. On the "Books I've Rented" tab, click on the title of your rental textbook and look under "Return Information".

Semester guarantee
If your semester is longer than the rental period (125 days), just provide documentation from your school and we'll give you an extension. This guarantee does not cover two terms.

Returning rental textbooks
  1. Log into your account at Textbooks.com.
  2. Click your name in the upper-right-hand corner and you'll see a drop-down menu. From this menu, select "Books I've Rented".
  3. If a window appears regarding internet content security, you will need to select "No." At this point, you will see your rental item.
  4. Select the return button next to the item(s).
  5. Print your return label and packing slip.
  6. Include the packing slip with your return.
  7. Affix your shipping label to the outside of your box.
  8. Drop off your package at a UPS location on or before the due date. NOTE: The "due date" is the date by which your return must be postmarked and shipped.

NOTE: When returning your rental textbook, you must use the pre-paid shipping label found in your Textbooks.com account. It's addressed to the Chegg warehouse and already includes tracking and insurance.

Can I track my return shipment?
Yes! Just take note of the tracking number on your pre-paid shipping label.

Have you received my return shipment?
Log into your account and click the "Books I've Rented" tab. The status of received returns is "Return Acknowledged". Please allow 1-3 business days for processing after your book is received. We'll send you an email once your return has been processed.

Late rental returns

If you know for sure that your rental return is going to be late, call us at 877-292-6442 on or before your rental textbook's return due date and we'll extend it by 15 days. Be sure to call because if we don't hear from you by your due date, we'll automatically extend the rental period by 15 days and extension fees will apply. Extensions are nonrefundable.

If we still haven't received your book by the end of the 15-day extension period, you'll be charged a replacement fee and your book's status will change to "Purchased". The replacement fee is the textbook's list price minus any rental or extension fees you've already paid (note: there is a $10 minimum restocking fee).

You can get 100% of your money back automatically if you return your textbook within 7 days of receiving the charge. There is no need to contact us - just return the textbook using the pre-paid UPS return label from your account. We'll refund you once we receive your book. Click here to get your prepaid UPS return label now.

You can sell your purchased textbooks back to us if you don't need them.

Before purchasing a textbook from the Marketplace, please check its condition and the location from which it ships, as location may impact how long it takes for your book to arrive. The book you purchase will ship directly from that Marketplace seller and not from Textbooks.com.

Marketplace payment options

The following payment methods are accepted in the Marketplace:

  • Visa
  • American Express
  • MasterCard
  • Discover

PayPal is not accepted for Marketplace orders or for orders containing a Marketplace textbook. So, for example, if you order three textbooks and two are direct from Textbooks.com and one is from the Marketplace, your entire order is ineligible for PayPal.

To pay with PayPal, please order your textbooks direct from Textbooks.com.

Diners Club is also not accepted for Marketplace orders or for orders containing a Marketplace textbook.

Marketplace authorization hold

Marketplace transactions place an authorization hold on your credit/debit account until each seller has accepted their portion of the order, at which time the actual charges are placed against your account. This may result in charges that temporarily exceed the amount of your order. Authorization charges will drop off of your credit/debit card within 72 business hours from order placement. Please contact your bank or credit card provider for further information on how they handle these situations.

Marketplace sales tax

For your planning and convenience, we display an estimated sales tax amount when orders are placed. The exact sales tax will be calculated and charged at the time your order is shipped.

Barnes & Noble sales tax

The Textbooks.com Marketplace is powered by Barnes & Noble. In accordance with applicable law, Barnes & Noble collects sales tax in all states.

  • Sales tax is applied to the total amount of the order and is based on the shipment's destination state and local sales tax rates.
  • States that impose sales tax collection on Shipping & Handling expenses require that sales tax be applied to Shipping & Handling when the item that is being shipped is subject to sales tax.
  • Tax credits can only be applied after the order has already been billed - customers must email their request for credit to taxes@book.com.
Marketplace shipping

Marketplace sellers are allowed 2 business days for processing after your order is accepted. Therefore, please leave yourself an additional 2 business days on top of the estimated shipping time to receive your textbook.

  1. The textbook must be in good condition.
  2. All original components (CDs/DVDs, study guides, etc.) listed on the quote must be included.
  3. The textbook cannot be an international or teacher's edition.

What is "good condition"?

Before you sell a textbook, please inspect it to ensure that it's in good condition. Though it can display minor signs of wear and tear, a textbook in "good condition" is always free from:

  • Stains
  • Water damage
  • Missing, loose, or torn pages/cover
  • Excessive writing
  • Broken spine
  • Torn or damaged binding
  • Any other significant damage or disfigurement

A textbook can still be in good condition if it shows regular signs of use, such as:

  • Some writing
  • Highlighting (from a little to a lot)
  • Rounded or dog-eared corners
  • Minor scrapes or scratches
  • Faded cover art
  • Creased pages

Rejected textbooks

Decisions regarding the condition of textbooks rest solely with Textbooks.com. All decisions are final. If we receive your textbook and decide that it doesn't meet our quality standards, it will be recycled responsibly.

eTextbooks

eTextbook FAQs

What are eTextbooks?

eTextbooks are digital versions of traditional printed textbooks. When you buy an eTextbook, you download it to your computer - you can either read it from there or load it onto an e-reader, tablet, or other portable electronic reading device.

Why choose eTextbooks over physical textbooks?

Some of the reasons that students choose eTextbooks include:
  • Instant access
  • Reduced price
  • Less weight to lug around
  • Enhanced features like built-in highlighting and notetaking
  • Environmental sustainability: eTextbooks don't consume any paper or create any waste

Do eTextbooks expire?

Expiration rules vary by publisher. Log into your account and click on the "Digital Bookshelf" to view the digital rights of your eTextbook.

Can I print from my eTextbook?

Yes. Printing rules can vary by publisher. Check the publisher's guidelines before printing.

Can I share my eTextbook with my classmates?

No. eTextbooks are designed as a one-time download to a single personal computer. There are Encoded Digital Rights Management rules in place that disallow sharing eTextbooks.

Can I make a back-up copy of my eTextbook, in case my computer crashes?

With the exception of Adobe eTextbooks, your eBook is stored online to prevent loss of data. For Adobe eTextbooks, you may store back-ups on removable media (CD or DVD) or copy it to an external drive. In the event of a computer crash, you may reinstall your eTextbook on the same computer to which it was originally downloaded.

If you need help re-downloading your textbook, contact us at 877-292-6442 or eBooks@textbooks.com.

The price for an item on the Site may differ from the price shown in a User's shopping cart -- it is possible that such price may increase or decrease between the time the item is placed in a shopping cart and the time that the purchase is actually made. On rare occasions, an item may be priced incorrectly on the Site. If the price for such an item on the Site is incorrect as shown and the actual price is higher than the price shown at the time of purchase, then, at its sole discretion, Textbooks.com may either (i) contact the User for instructions before shipping the item or charging the User for the item; (ii) cancel the order for the item and notify the User of such cancellation; or (iii) ship the item at the incorrect price to the benefit of the User.

X. TERMINATION OF USAGE

Textbooks.com may issue a warning, temporarily suspend, indefinitely suspend, or terminate any User's right to use or access all or any part of the Site, including any account thereon, without notice, for any reason in Textbooks.com's sole discretion, including without limitation Textbooks.com's belief that such access would violate any applicable law or would be harmful to the interests of, or potentially cause financial loss or legal liability to, Textbooks.com, any Textbooks.com Provider or another User.

User acknowledges that it is important to keep the e-mail address associated with his or her account current because although the User may be able to log into his or her Textbooks.com account using an old e-mail address, such User will not receive important messages from Textbooks.com about his or her orders and inquiries or other matters.

User accepts full responsibility for all activities that occur within such User's Textbooks.com account.

XIV. NOTICES

User consents to receive electronic communications from Textbooks.com, whether addressed to the e-mail address associated with such User's Textbooks.com account or posted on the Site. You agree to be bound to any changes to these Terms of Use when you use the Service after the modification is posted. It is therefore important that you review these Terms of Use regularly to ensure you are aware of any changes.

Entire Agreement
These Terms of Use, including the documents referenced in these terms as well as any other terms and conditions provided to you by Chegg when using certain features of the Service, are the entire agreement between you and Chegg regarding the Service. Chegg reserves the right in its sole discretion to make changes to the Service at any time. Any description of the Service provided by Chegg is not a representation that the Service is working or will always work in that manner, as Chegg is continuously updating the Service, and these updates may not always be reflected in these Terms of Use.

Use of Service
You agree to not use the Service in any way other than what is deemed appropriate by us, including for any illegal purposes. Any other use of the Service or information will not be allowed without Chegg's prior written consent. We may immediately terminate any User's use of the Service without notice if we believe such User is in violation of these Terms of Use or otherwise for any reason or no reason, at our sole discretion.

Age and Residence Requirements
You must be 18 years of age or older to register for an account for use of and the Service. You may only set up an account for use of the Service if you reside in the United States. Account and Registration
You may have only one account that will identify you and will allow you to use the Service. You may not create more than one account for the Service. You may not create an account for anyone else unless authorized by Chegg. All information used to create an account must be accurate and complete. You may not impersonate any other person or use a name that is not your own. It is your responsibility to update your information to keep your account current and accurate. When you set up an account, you will also be asked to choose a password. You are solely responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password. You agree not to use the account, username, or password of another User at any time or to disclose your password to any third party. You agree to notify Chegg immediately if you suspect any unauthorized use of your account or access to your password. You are solely responsible for any and all use of your account. Chegg has the right to terminate your account for any reason at our sole discretion.

A Chegg account needs an active credit or debit card on file which is tied to an account at a financial institution (prepaid credit cards may not be used). In order to authorize the card, Chegg will initiate a pending charge for $1.00 (one dollar) on the account. This charge will not be authorized and, as such, will simply disappear from your financial statement - usually within seven days. No money for this authorization will be paid to Chegg.

Please be aware that this $1.00 pending charge is initiated each time you edit your card info or place an order which cannot be processed. Contact your financial institution for information about how long they retain pending charges before allowing them to disappear.

Fees
All shipping fees that Chegg will charge a User will be clearly displayed during checkout. Chegg will store your credit or debit card information, encrypted, and you hereby acknowledge and agree that Chegg may charge you for any lost, stolen, or damaged books associated with your account. Chegg will charge an additional amount to your credit or debit card if you choose to buy any rented book at any time during the rental period. By renting a book from Chegg, you agree to the storing of your credit or debit card and/or debit card information and you also agree to any additional charges that Chegg deems necessary due to user misuse of the Service, including, without limitation, any fees resulting from damages to rented books, lost or stolen books, auto-extensions, and/or unreturned books. You agree that we may, at our sole discretion, send your account to a collection agency if you fail to pay all fees due and owing to Chegg.

Email
You agree that any notifications or receipts from Chegg will be delivered to you by email at the address you provided to Chegg when you created your account or as later updated. You hereby agree and acknowledge that Chegg is not responsible to notify you in any way other than by email and that any notifications are a courtesy; you remain responsible for minding the due date(s) whether you receive communication from Chegg or not.

You acknowledge that Chegg will not ask you for your personal information, account username, and password, or any of your credit or debit card information via email. Chegg will have no responsibility for any misuse of such information if you provide such information via email.

Account Cancellation
You may cancel your account at any time by visiting http://www.chegg.com/contactus/. Your account will only be cancelled and closed after you have returned all books that have been rented to you and all transactions have been processed including payment of assessed penalties or the cashing of any refund check. If you do not access your account within two years, Chegg has the right to cancel your account at its sole discretion.

Payments/Processing
Any person who desires to use any Service must have a confirmed credit or debit card in order to make payments to Chegg. Chegg accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. Chegg reserves the right to store your credit or debit card information and to charge it if you have not followed all of the agreements and policies set forth in these Terms of Use. Chegg will make reasonable efforts to process your transactions in a timely manner. You agree not to hold Chegg responsible in the event Chegg does not credit or debit your credit or debit card for a period of time due to circumstances beyond our control. Chegg makes no guarantees regarding the processing time for charges.

If you do use a debit card, you agree to keep your bank account in good standing during the term of your rental. In the event that you are charged a replacement or extension fee for a book that is not returned to Chegg and your debit card account is inactive or not funded, Chegg reserves the right to attempt to charge your debit card for the replacement value or extension fee, as Chegg deems necessary, to collect full payments owed. If, after these attempts, the replacement value is still not paid, then Chegg reserves the right to place you into collections status. Collections may be done by Chegg or a third party on Chegg's behalf.

Stolen Accounts
It is your responsibility to keep your account information private. In the event that your account is used by an unauthorized party, you may cancel it immediately by contacting Chegg; however, Chegg is not responsible for any amounts that were charged on your account. Please make sure when you are using a communal computer to log off completely.

Credit Cards
We accept the following credit or debit cards: American Express, Discover, MasterCard, and Visa. There is no surcharge for using any of these credit or debit cards to make purchases from Chegg. Where your billing address is requested, please be sure to provide the address and phone number your financial institution has on record, as well as the card's CVV (card security code). Incorrect information will likely cause a delay or failure in processing your order.

Multiple Product Orders
We attempt to ship all products contained in each order at the same time and in the same package. However, all your books may not come from Chegg directly or from the same partner, and may be shipped separately. Products that are unavailable at the time of shipping will be shipped as they become available, unless cancelled.

Refunds
Our 21-Day ''Any Reason'' Guarantee means that items postmarked for return to Chegg within 21 days of the date you place your order may be eligible for a full refund (minus the costs of shipping and a handling and restocking fee), as follows:

  1. Return by UPS: In order to start your refund process, you must retrieve your prepaid UPS shipping label from the ''Return'' button on the ''My Account'' section on the Website. You must appropriately package the returned items (to avoid damage) and ship your items to Chegg using that label through UPS. If a book is sent back without proper packaging material (e.g. bubble wrap), and the book has visible damage, you will not be provided a refund.
  2. Eligible Items: Our 21-Day ''Any Reason'' Guarantee applies to both rentals and sale items that are eligible.
    1. For rental items, the Any Reason 21-Day Guarantee policy only applies to rentals for 90 or more days (semester). Items that are selected for rental for 60 days must be returned within 15 days of the order date. Items must be returned in the condition in which they were sent by Chegg to be eligible for a refund (see Damage and Losses section below for more information).
    2. For sale items, Chegg must receive the items in the condition that they were sent out, unopened and without damage or signs of use. If sale items are returned in new condition, you will receive a full refund minus the cost of shipping. If sale items are returned and are not in the original condition the refund amount will be for the original amount minus a 25% fee and the cost of shipping. For books that you have purchased and have been used (including highlighting, handwriting, activated accessory code or removal of pages), the 21-Day ''Any Reason'' Guarantee policy is void and no refund will be issued.
  3. Refund Amounts: For eligible items, Chegg will refund the rental or purchase price paid less the costs of shipping plus a handling fee of $5 per item, or a max of $10 per package. Chegg will provide the refund (less shipping costs and handling fees) for eligible items by issuing a credit to the debit or credit card you used for the rental or purchase (or if you used a Chegg gift certificate, by crediting the gift certificate, which will be reflected in your My Account on Chegg.com), within a reasonable time after our receipt of the return package and verification of eligibility. If Chegg determines any returned items are not eligible for refund, Chegg will notify you at your e-mail address on file with Chegg.

Shipping to You
Chegg will make reasonable efforts to ship any book purchased or rented within two days of the transaction, but Chegg does not guarantee the shipment time. You agree to not hold Chegg responsible for shipping problems that may cause your package to arrive late or be damaged in transit. Chegg currently uses UPS as the primary means of shipping for all orders fulfilled from our warehouse (currently located in Kentucky). We strive to send any Standard Shipping orders to military addresses and PO Boxes via USPS, but cannot guarantee delivery; street addresses are preferred.

Some orders are fulfilled by Chegg partners who may employ such carriers as UPS, USPS, and FedEx. Shipping charges are calculated using third-party systems. In addition to Standard Shipping (seven to ten days) and Ground Shipping (four to seven days), Chegg offers Advanced Shipping on some titles. Additional shipping charges will apply. If available, you will see options during checkout for 2-Day and 1-Day shipping. Expected delivery times are two business days and one business day, respectively. Orders must be placed before 10:00 AM, Eastern Time to ensure 2-Day and 1-Day delivery on the next respective business days.

Delivery is available only within the United States. We do not accept orders outside the United States, including territories such as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and any military addresses, such as APOs or FPOs.

We cannot guarantee when an order will arrive. Consider any shipping or transit time offered to you by Chegg or other parties as an estimate. We encourage you to order in a timely fashion to avoid delays caused by shipping or product availability. Tracking information will be sent by email as soon as it becomes available and the information will be updated in the ''My Account'' section on the Website.

We are committed to creating a risk-free buying experience through the Service. If you have not received your order in a timely manner and tracking information is available, please contact the shipping carrier as the first step in looking into the status of your delivery. If your textbook fails to arrive, you have 45 days from the original date of order to contact Chegg in order for Chegg to file a claim.

Return Shipping Policy (Rentals)
When you rent items through the Service, you must return those items to Chegg by the end of your rental period. (If you have purchased the book from Chegg, you do not need to return it.) The due date for return will be given to you when you place your order. You will be held responsible for any late return shipments that are not postmarked by the due date. You must ship your items to Chegg at its designated location by your due date to avoid extension or replacement fees. If you do need to keep your rental for longer than the original term, you may purchase the book or buy an extension in the ''My Account'' section on the Website.

We will provide you with a printable prepaid UPS shipping label. Simply log on to the Website and click the ''Return'' button on the ''My Account'' page. Follow the prompts to generate the label. By placing an order through the Website or the Service, you agree to use this prepaid shipping label to ensure delivery and proper accounting of your return.

If your return is not postmarked by your due date, you may be charged an extension fee. If you are charged an extension fee and the rental is not postmarked or returned by the end of the extension period, you will be charged the remaining replacement fee. Please note that this second fee is the difference between the previously authorized charges and the book's costs.

Books should be packaged appropriately to keep them from being damaged during shipping. If a book is sent back without proper packaging material (e.g., bubble wrap), and the book has visible damage, it will be your responsibility to pay for those damages.

Tax
Chegg book rental service and sales have to be taxed in every state, because we have physical property (the books) in every state. Depending on your state, this may be a rental tax, sales tax and/or use tax. Of course, tax rates are different from state to state. You are responsible for paying all such taxes.

Damage and Losses
Once in your possession, damage to or loss of a rental book is your responsibility. You will be charged replacement fees, for books that can no longer be rented. If the book is lost or stolen, a replacement fee will apply. Limited highlighting in a rental book is allowed; handwriting is not allowed. Any writing or highlighting that Chegg deems excessive or that hinders the readability of the book will be your responsibility and you will be charged for a replacement. Please follow all of our guidelines to ensure no fees will be charged to your account.

If you receive a damaged book from Chegg, it is your responsibility to contact us within 21 days to report the problem, so please inspect any item thoroughly upon receipt.

Asset Ownership
All rentals remain the property of Chegg even while the book is in your possession. You may opt to purchase any rented books from Chegg, either at the end of a rental cycle, at any point during the rental cycle. If you wish to purchase a book you have rented through the Service, you can do so by accessing your "My Account" page on the Website and clicking the ''Purchase'' button. In this case, title (ownership) transfers to you as soon as your credit or debit card is authorized for purchase value. If you purchase the title through our purchase program, title (ownership) changes hands as soon as you receive the product.

Indemnity
You agree to indemnify, defend and hold harmless Chegg, its subsidiaries, and affiliates, and their respective officers, agents, partners and employees, from and against any loss, liability, claim, or demand, including reasonable attorneys' fees, due to or arising out of your use of the Website or the Service in violation of these Terms of Use and/or arising from a breach of these Terms of Use.
