Summary

Understanding Intermediate Algebra : A Graphing Approach takes the successful Hirsch/Goodman series into the technology arena. Graphing technology is used as a tool to help promote understanding of concepts or to relieve the tedium of manual calculations. Graphing technology allows students to approach problems from three complimentary perspectives : the algebraic, the numerical, and the graphical (geometric).

  • Functions are introduced early and then reemphasized throughout the text to serve as a unifying theme for a variety of topics. This early-function approach also allows for easier entry into mathematical modeling.
  • Problem solving is encouraged and initiated in "dialogues" found in solutions to selected problems.
  • Carefully constructed examples cast students as active "thinkers," rather than passive "readers." Related ideas are compared and contrasted, helping students to understand the sometimes subtle distinctions. Exercise sets also incorporate this "compare/contrast" approach.
  • A Study Skill section concludes the Preface, and topical discussion of study skills is found throughout Chapters 1-4. Coverage includes aspects to studying algebra, like doing homework or preparing for exams.
  • Margin Comments throughout offer interesting questions and comments designed to involve students in the learning process.
  • Different Perspectives boxes highlight the connection between the algebraic and geometric interpretation of the same concept. Thus, students are encouraged to think about mathematical ideas form more than one point of view.
  • Thinking Out Loud problems demonstrate problem-solving strategies by presenting solutions to selected problems in a question-and-answer format.
  • Chapter Summaries describe basic concepts and include examples
