Owens, Louis : University of New Mexico
Louis Owens, who is Choctaw-Cherokee-Irish descent, is Professor of English at the University of New Mexico. He is the author of several books, including Other Destinies: Understanding the American Indian Novel and the novels The Sharpest Sight and Bone Game, all published by the University of Oklahoma Press.
''Wolfsong is a powerful evocation of the native world we are losing forever in the American West, and the conflict over its destruction, by a man who knows what he's talking about. Louis Owens is to be congratulated. This is a book that will make some difference.''
''We are led to difficult questions about authenticity, about common bonds which Native Americans of very different, or mixed, background, may be in the process of discovering...[A] finely crafted novel.''
--Western American Literature.
''The superstitious and the supernatural enter into this novel as well, in something of the way of the lure or the call of the wild-the clan and ancestral 'wolfsongs' heard by Tom Joseph as he seeks his authentic Indian self. . . We owe Owens some gratitude for embracing the changes which his fiction represents.''
--American Indian Quarterly.
