Fit Entertainment Into Your College Budget: It's Possible!

Students may be able to visit local museums for free.

Last year, I lived right next to a movie theater. It was great to see movies all the time, but it was expensive on a college budget. Luckily, a friend told me about AMC's discount Thursdays, when college students can go to AMC theaters for free. I promised myself that I could only go to the movies on Thursdays, and I've saved a lot since then.

Other theaters, such as Cinemark, offer discounts for college students every day. And movie theaters aren't the only places that offer deals. I've found that in Boston, where I live, most museums offer some kind of student discount. Famous museums that offer student discounts include The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Denver Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

There are also many ways to see cheap live entertainment on a college budget. A lot of my friends have gotten cheap Broadway tickets with their student IDs, though student discounts vary from show to show, so you'll have to check on the performance's website or ask the person at the ticket booth. As students, we also get discounted tickets to The Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, Houston Ballet, the New York City Ballet, and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra.

Many colleges have memberships to local museums or venues. Through my school, I can go to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Institute of Contemporary Art for free any day of the week. Check your school's website or ask an upperclassman to find out about the discounts your school offers.

In my experience, a lot of places offer discounts for college students. If you're interested in seeing a performance, going to a museum, or seeing a movie, check the place's website beforehand or ask the person at the ticket booth when you get there. I advise bringing your student ID with you everywhere; you never know when it will come in handy!
