How Having a Personal Blog Benefits Your College CareerJuly 26, 2013 in Work & Internships
Having your own personal blog is beneficial to your social life as well as your career. Blogs are a great way to showcase your work, create relationships, and to get your name out there. From my experience, having a blog has helped me in surprising ways.
Entering college, I had the mindset to do all my assigned work so I could get good grades. My journalism professor, however, changed my perspective on things. She told the class that she wanted us to create and run our own blogs. We were told to post on a topic of our choice twice a week — but these blogs were optional and not graded. Of course, many of the students in the class didn't take the opportunity, but I rose to the challenge.
By the end of the semester, I had numerous posts and pictures on my blog, and I was proud of my accomplishment. I didn't see the purpose of the assignment yet but I continued to maintain my blog, anyway.
A few months ago, I was applying for a writing job. The company asked in the application for me to list the URLs to any blogs or websites I run so they could see my work. After applying for the position, I was thrilled with the feedback I got. They said that not many people had provided online work and that seeing it is "refreshing" and "impressive."
At this point, I finally realized the purpose of the blog my professor assigned us. I got in contact with my professor and told her my experience. I thanked her for giving us the idea. She replied, "I knew that the go-getters in the class would do the assignment because they're the ones who push themselves in life, and they will be rewarded."
My personal blog has not only helped me toward my career path, but it has helped me grow personally as well. I got a lot of feedback from my readers who shared the same opinions as me. It's always nice to be able to state your own opinions and not worry about being judged. My blog was a place for me to let everything that was on my mind run free. I found that to be very healthy.
Overall, my blog has been a success. I recommend any college student, no matter what major, to create their own as well.
