Textbooks.com's survey finds overwhelming percentage of college students think new textbooks are too expensive. Almost 40% of students plan on purchasing more used textbooks this fall while over 30% plan on renting more, and 28% expect to purchase more digital eTextbooks. Sixty percent of students prefer used textbooks, followed by rental (24%), new (9%) and eTextbooks (7%).
Columbia, MO (PRWEB) July 24, 2012- Textbooks.com, an online textbooks retailer, recently conducted a customer survey to understand college students' textbook purchasing habits and identify what drives students to purchase used textbooks over new, rental and eTextbooks.
According to the survey, 60 percent of students ranked used textbooks as their preferred choice, and 91 percent said they saved money when purchasing used textbooks.
"Understandably, students are cost conscious and care about the price of textbooks because in many cases, they're the ones footing the bill. Seventy-four percent of customers fund textbooks themselves," shared Susan Thompson, General Manager for Textbooks.com. "Students think new books are too expensive and they're comparing prices online and in their campus bookstores to find the best prices."
The survey showed that quality matters when it comes to used textbooks. The majority of customers reported they wanted a used textbook that either looked brand new, with no markings, or a gently used book, with minimal highlights and notes.
"This is something we've heard for a long time," continued Thompson. "Students don't want to spend top dollar on a brand new book - they want to save money, so they turn to used textbooks. Students desire high quality, competitively-priced used books and we are proud to be able to serve that need. We're the only textbooks provider to hand inspect all of our used textbooks. We want students to save money but we also want their experience to be positive."
With students heading back to college shortly, customers were asked how their purchasing habits would change in the next year and 39 percent responded they'll buy more used textbooks this year.
