Author Bio

Lepore, Monica :

Monica Lepore, EdD, has been an adapted aquatic instructor since 1978 and a trainer of adapted aquatic instructors since 1980. An associate professor of kinesiology at West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania, she directs two community adapted aquatic programs during the school year. She also directs aquatics at a camp for youths who are blind or visually impaired and at a camp for children with developmental disabilities.

Lepore coauthored the Adapted Aquatic Position Statement in 1995 for the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) Aquatic Council. She is also a recipient of a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives acknowledging her work on behalf of children with disabilities.

Lepore is a member of AAHPERD's Adapted Physical Activity and Aquatic councils and the National Consortium for Physical Education and Recreation for Individuals With Disabilities. She earned a doctor of education degree in leadership in adapted physical education from New York University.

Gayle, G. William :

G. William Gayle, PhD, has taught aquatic programs to individuals with disabilities since 1977. He has worked with individuals with spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and other neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. Since 1990, he has worked with preschool and early childhood populations with disabilities. In 1988, he was inducted into the Ohio Wheelchair Sports Hall of Fame for his work with athletic programs. Gayle is chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. He holds a doctorate in adapted physical education and psychology of mental retardation and developmental disabilities from The Ohio State University. He is a member of the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), the National Consortium of Physical Education and Recreation for Individuals with Disabilities, and the Council for Exceptional Children.

Stevens, Shawn F. :

Shawn F. Stevens, EdD, served as an adapted aquatics instructor trainer with the American Red Cross for 15 years. Since 1977 he has been a water safety instructor trainer, planning and implementing aquatic programs in community-based organizations. He is currently the Executive Director of the Delaware Foundation for Retarded Children and previously directed health and safety programs with the American Red Cross for 16 years. Stevens holds a master's degree in health administration, and a doctorate of education in leadership and innovation from Wilmington College.
