Summary

An annotated first-person account of Ralph Bunche's trip to South Africa in 1937-1938. Based on the notes he wrote (but never published), this journal explores the peculiar status of an African American in an African country, where whites treated him as an African, and inferior, and Africans saw him as a European and hence unworthy of trust. As an educated political scientist, he shares his perspective on the conditions of the cities, gold mines, tribal reserves, schools and missions. The book, which contains over fifty black and white photographs, was edited by Edgar (African Studies, Howard University), who wrote an introduction and provides extensive footnoting. Annotation c.
