Summary

Fundamentals of Precalculus is designed to review the fundamental topics that are necessary for success in calculus. Containing only five chapters, this text can be covered in a one-semester or one-term course with a minimum of deleting or skipping around. A student who is well acquainted with the material in this text will have the necessary skills, understanding, and insights required in calculus.

Features

  • Chapter Openers Each chapter opens with an application about a famous bridge. Historical descriptions of each bridge are linked with mathematical facts, allowing for an immediate and interesting start to each chapter. Much like how a bridge is built to link two locations with a faster and more efficient path, this text was written to link a student's past mathematical training with the content of calculus in a fast and efficient manner.
  • Graphing Calculator Discussions Optional graphing calculator discussions have been integrated into the text and are clearly marked by graphing calculator icons so that they can be skipped by those not using this technology.
  • For Thought At the end of each section a set of 10 true or false statements help students review the basic concepts presented in the section and check their understanding before beginning the exercises. These may also be used for writing and/or discussion. These exercises will help students understand that a statement is not true if there is at least one exception or counter example to the statement. Understanding if a statement is true or false is extremely important in calculus and all other mathematics courses. The answers for all "For Thought" exercises are included in the back of this text.
  • Now Try Exercises At the end of every in-text example students are directed to "Now Try" a specific exercise. This feature encourages students to immediately try an exercise and test their comprehension of concepts illustrated in the example.
  • Exercises Sets The exercise sets have been carefully written to ensure that the exercises range from easy to challenging, and are arranged in order of increasing difficulty. The exercises include ample drill exercises, applications, and graphing calculator exercises, which are designed to help students learn the concepts. The exercise sets are concise so that a single section can be covered in a single class period.
  • Highlights This end-of-chapter feature presents an overview of each section of the chapter. It provides a useful summary of the basic information that students should have mastered in the chapter.
  • Chapter Review Exercises Contained at the end of each chapter, this extensive set of exercises will help students review the chapter and prepare for testing.
  • Concepts of Calculus Every chapter ends with a particular concept from calculus, as well as some exercises designed to illustrate that concept. This one-page feature will allow students a preview of important topics of calculus and may be used as a writing or collaborative learning assignment.
  • Basic Algebra Review Appendix A contains a four-section review of some basic algebra concepts. The examples and exercises in this review will provide students with the opportunity to "brush up" on exponents and radicals, operations with polynomials, factoring polynomials, and rational expressions.
