Molecular Biology of the Cell is the classic in-depth text reference in cell biology. Author Bio

Alberts, Bruce :

Bruce Alberts received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and spent 30 years as a Professor of Biochemistry - first at Princeton University and then at the University of California, San Francisco. His research interests focused on the protein machines that replicate DNA. Since 1993, he has served as the President of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. One of his major goals at the Academy has been to change the nature and extent of the science education received by every student in the United States, starting with children 5 years old and continuing through the college years.

Johnson, Alexander : University of California, San Francisco

Alexander Johnson received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and is now a Professor at the University of California, San Francisco, where he teaches molecular biology to medical, pharmacy, dentistry, and graduate students. His research interests include the mechanisms used by cells to switch their genes on and off, as well as the molecular genetics of Candida albicans, a human fungal pathogen.

Lewis, Julian :

Julian Lewis did his D.Phil. in physics at the University of Oxford and then, after a postdoctoral year in Russia, switched to developmental biology, working in the laboratory of Lewis Wolpert in London. He moved on to King's College London, where for eight years he taught medical students. He is currently a Principal Scientist at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, with research interests in the development of sense organs and in the role of the Notch signaling pathway in controlling the fine-grained patterns of cell types that form the tissues of the vertebrate body.

Raff, Martin : University College London

Martin Raff was born and educated in Montreal. He received his BSc and MD degrees at McGill University and did a residency in medicine at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal and in neurology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He did postdoctoral training in immunology at the National Institute for Medical Research in London, after which he moved to University College London, where he has been a Professor of Biology since 1979. He is currently at the Medical Research Council Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology and Cell Biology Unit and in the Biology Department at University College London. His research has been in immunology, cell biology, and developmental neurobiology. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Academia Europaea, a foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, was president of the British Society of Cell Biology from 1991 to 1995, and is currently Chairman of the UK Life Sciences Committee.

Roberts, Keith :

Keith Roberts did his degree and Ph.D. in biochemistry at the University of Cambridge. He then moved to the John Innes Centre in Norwich where for 16 years he was Head of the Department of Cell Biology. He is currently Associate Research Director and his scientific interest is in plant biology, with a particular focus on the functional architecture of the plant cell wall and its role in plant growth and development. He maintains an active interest in science education in schools.

Walter, Peter : University of California, San Francisco

Peter Walter grew up in Berlin, Germany. He received his Ph.D. from The Rockefeller University in New York for studies with Nobel laureate Günter Blobel. He is currently an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California at San Francisco. His research program concerns fundamental questions in molecular cell biology, such as the mechanisms of how proteins are sorted and moved across membranes, how membrane fusion is regulated, and how cells adjust the abundance of intracellular organelles according to need.
