Summary

Sport, play, and athletics have always been significant activities in American culture. Ironically, it is only in the past two decades that philosophers have developed a sustained philosophy based entirely on the phenomenon of sport in human life. In Philosophy of Sport, Drew Hyland begins with an introduction to the discipline and brief history of the subject. He addresses a wide range of practical and theoretical issues which touch on sociological, psychological, and philosophical themes -- including racism, heroism, risk-taking, sport and values, sexism, the connection between mind and body, the ways in which sport can and has responded meaningfully to these issues, ethical issues such as paternalism, drugs and the "anything to win" attitude, and finally, sport as an occasion of self-knowledge, using the insights of writers as Herrigel and Beisser.

As an introduction to this relatively new realm of philosophy, Philosophy of Sport not only sets out the major issues and controversies, but expertly evaluates them and guides readers toward conclusions of their own. Students, professionals, athletes, and even Monday morning quarterbacks will find insight here into the significance of sport in their lives and in our society.
