Summary

"In 1548 Martin Guerre left his wife, Bertrande; after eight years he ostensibly returned, was embraced by Bertrande and resumed his life. But there were suspicions among Guerre's family members that the man who returned was not actually Guerre but an impostor, and eventually he was arrested and tried for assuming someone else's name and person with the intention to defraud. A judge trying the case, confronted by an abundance of confusing testimony, was determined to declare the defendant to be Bertrande's husband. But at the penultimate moment of the trial, the real Martin Guerre returned to reclaim his wife. The impostor, Arnaud du Tilh, was hanged." (N Y Times Book Rev) Bibliography and Index.
